Tom Murphy serves as the Vice President for Information Technology and is the first University Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the University of Pennsylvania. As CIO, Tom guides the evolution, integration and effective use of computing resources throughout Penn and its’ decentralized IT community of more than 900 IT professionals. He has overall responsibility for the consultative and operating committees that shape priorities to meet the ever-increasing demand for information technology and advises the President, Provost, Executive Vice President and the Board of Trustees on issues involving IT and information security.

Tom has over thirty years of experience leading information technology in large and mid-size corporate environments. Prior to joining Penn, he served as the Global CIO for DaVita HealthCare Partners, where he was responsible for all information technology supporting the company’s business and clinical operations. Prior to his tenure with DaVita Tom was the Senior Vice President and CIO of AmerisourceBergen, a $120 billion provider of pharmaceutical and health-care services. He has been a leader in information technology across multiple industries as CIO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., and Bristol Hotels & Resorts, and served in leadership roles at the Cendant Corporation, Omni Hotels, Interstate Hotels Corporation and Marriott Corporation.

Tom’s accomplishments include leading a $400 million Business Transformation program at AmerisourceBergen and a $200 million global redesign of mission-critical systems at Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Tom is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including recognition as a ‘Top Ten Breakaway Leader’ at the 2011 Global CIO Executive Summit; selection as a Top CIO of 2011 by SmartCEO Magazine; election to the CIO Hall of Fame in 2010; recognition as one of the Best CIOs in America in 2010 by Business Trends Quarterly; recognition as one of the ‘Top Ten Global CIOs for Leadership & Innovation’ in 2009; selection as one of the Premier 100 IT Leaders of 2002 by ComputerWorld; and recognition as one of the top 100 Innovators of 2001 by CIO Magazine.
